Things To Do In NYC In May

With the longer and warmer days of spring, you may be thinking about a trip to New York City for a family vacation or a quick getaway. If it is your first visit or you are a regular, you can always find an experience like none other in the Big Apple. If you are looking for things to do in NYC in May 2016, consider these events for a memorable vacation.

Five Borough Bike Tour

This event takes place May 1 and is a unique way to see the city and work off all those fabulous NYC meals at the same time. The tour takes participants on a 42-mile all-levels ride from lower Manhattan through Central Park, Harlem, and the Bronx. For that day, the bikes own the road and can experience the city without jockeying against taxis, cars, or trucks.

Ninth Avenue International Food Festival

Can you think of a better way to sample traditional foods from around the world, all on one street? This popular festival, voted “the Best Street Fair in NYC,” offers free admission and lots of entertainment in addition to delectable global fare.

Shakespeare in the Park

This outdoor theater program begins its summer season May 24 and runs through August 14 and historically features top acting talent from stage and screen. Their season kicks off with “The Taming of the Shrew,” so be sure to get your tickets for a true New York experience.

Go out to the Ball Game

With typically beautiful weather, May is a great time to watch the Yankees play. Swing over to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx for a hot dog and 9 innings. Home games run May 8-15 and again May 24-26.

Parades

With May’s beautiful weather, NYC hosts many parades throughout the month to celebrate and honor culture and holidays. Some of the parades you can see include:

• Mother’s Day on May 8
• 10th Annual Dance Parade and Festival on May 21
• Memorial Day Parade on May 30 (several locations)

Fleet Week

The week of May 25-31 is designated by the city of New York as Fleet Week in recognition of the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, and has been celebrated since 1984. During that time, the general public has a chance to tour the ships and see demonstrations in support of these maritime branches of the military. Other special events include the Parade of Ships, Memorial Day parades, and performances by the Navy Band, to name a few.
