1.Flatiron Building
The Flatiron building was designed by Daniel Burnham and built in 1902. When it was built there was a lot of doubt from spectators that it would survive. Many thought that due to its triangular shape it would eventually fall apart. Originally this building was built to serve as an office for the George A. Fuller company, an architecture firm. Although the company moved out in 1929 and today the building serves as offices for publishing businesses.
2.Empire State Building
The Empire State building was built during a race to build the tallest building. The race was between the Chrysler building, the 40 wall street bank of Manhattan and the Empire State building. Since 1931, when the building was built, it stayed as the largest building in the world for 40 years. The tower that sits at the top of the building was originally built to serve as a docking port for airships.
3.The Chrysler Building
Designed by William Van Allen, the Chrysler building was once the tallest building in the world in 1928. However, it only lasted 11 months in this title. Once the Empire state building was finished the Chrysler building was no longer the tallest building, but it did remain as one of New Yorks favourite buildings. In 2005 a survey suggested that architects, builders, historians, etc. rated the Chrysler building as New York’s top building.
4. The Metropolitan Opera
The Metropolitan Opera which is also known as The Met, was founded in 1883. The first location was built on Broadway. However, it wasn’t until 1966 that the Met opened at Lincoln Centre. The first performances in 1800s were all in Italian and then switched to being all in German. It was only later that they settled with performing operas in their original language.
